A Tangled Mess of Grace
A Tangled Mess of Grace

“When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the Rock that is higher than I.” — Psalm 61:2

The other day, I learned a new Hebrew slang word: פּלונטר — “plonter.” (Probably borrowed from Yiddish.)

A plonter is a knot… a tangled mess… a complicated situation with no easy solution. Something so twisted and intertwined that you hardly know where to begin unraveling it.

Honestly? It felt like one of the most relatable Hebrew words I’ve ever heard.

Sometimes life itself becomes a plonter.

It may be a puzzling health crisis where you feel terrible but doctors, with all their tests and technology, can't seem to find anything wrong. Or it could be an obviously dysfunctional family dynamic, but you've been doing the crazy dance so long that it's become all you know.

Maybe your relationship drama has caused you to choose 'It's complicated" on your social media status; or a financial situation has become so convoluted that it seems impossible to ever sort out. The kids are out of control and everyone ignores the pink elephant sitting in the middle of the living room.

If this was a multiple choice exam, you might just check off the 'all of the above' option.

There are times in life when we start to have the overwhelming feeling that everything has become just “too complicated.” One problem is tied to another until it feels like a tangled pile of necklaces in a jewelry box.

I remember my daughter Courtney once coming to me holding in her outstretched hands a bunch of necklaces that had somehow become entangled together into one impossible knot. I knew that the 'somehow' had a name - one of my grandchildren that we had been conveniently ignoring while we visited had gotten into something.

The thing is, I like things to be neat, tidy and organized. I don't do well with disorder and chaos. I had planned to have a yard sale in preparation for moving, and had organized the jewelry I wanted to sell on a cardboard with each necklace carefully pinned along with its matching earings.

It took me hours! But I felt satisfied that it was a job well done. So when Courtney came to me with gold chains and bits of silver hanging between her fingers, I knew exactly what had happened to all my hard work - it had become a 'plonter'!

Courtney has this nervous habit of laughing when something goes wrong, so she started giggling and the more she chortled, the madder I got!

I didn't find it funny at all - at the time - even though we laugh about it now.

The thing is - the harder she yanked on the pile of necklaces, the tighter the knots became. All her frantic efforts just made things worse!

Isn’t that often how we handle life?

We panic. We force. We strive. We try to fix everything at once. But yanking harder usually only tightens the knots.

🌿 Pause Before Pulling

When we find ourselves in a plonter, perhaps the first thing we need to do is pause and seek God for His wisdom and strategy. There is no single formula with God.

One time Moses struck the rock. Another time he was told to speak to it. At the Red Sea, Moses lifted his rod. At the Jordan River, Joshua had to instruct the priests to step into the water first before it parted.

God gives fresh wisdom for each situation. Sometimes He does not show us the whole solution immediately. Instead, He gives light for just the next step.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105

A lamp does not illuminate the entire road ahead. It simply gives enough light to take the next obedient step. It's like carrying a flashlight to find your way to the toilet in the middle of the night while camping. All you get is enough light at your feet so you see and path and hopefully don't trip over a tree root.

When life feels hopelessly tangled, don’t try to untangle the whole knot at once or you'll likely feel completely overwhelmed. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you which strand to address first. God is faithful to give us wisdom when we ask - He will make us to know wisdom in our inner being.

But we have to be willing to obey the instructions we receive - one surrendered step at a time. This required humility.

🌿 Humility Untangles Many Knots

Sometimes pride tightens the plonter.

Humility loosens it.

Naaman almost missed his healing because he resisted God’s simple instruction to wash in the Jordan River. But when he humbled himself and obeyed, healing came. (2 Kings 5)

Humility means being willing to:

  • apologize,

  • forgive,

  • ask for help,

  • seek wise counsel,

  • admit mistakes,

  • release control,

  • and obey God even when His instructions seem small or uncomfortable.

At the same time, humility is not passivity. We are not called to wallow endlessly in the mess, use it for sympathy, or give up altogether. God calls us to trust Him while continuing to walk forward in faith.

🌿 God Specializes in Redeeming Messes

One of the most comforting truths in Scripture is that God is not intimidated by chaos.

The Bible opens with the earth being described as “tohu va’vohu” — formless and void, a chaotic wasteland (Genesis 1:2).

Yet God spoke into the disorder and brought forth beauty, structure, and order.

He still does that today.

Sarah created a painful mess by trying to “help” God fulfill His promise through Hagar and Ishmael. Yet even there, God brought redemption and blessing. He declared concerning Ishmael:

“I have blessed him… and will make him fruitful and will multiply him exceedingly.” — Genesis 17:20

What grace.

Even when our plonter is partly our own fault — or someone else’s — God is still able to redeem what seems hopelessly tangled.

He can turn our mess into a message.

🌿 The Underside of the Tapestry

Have you ever seen the underside of a tapestry?

From beneath, it looks like a complete mess — loose threads, knots, confusion, and no discernible pattern. But from above, the artist sees a beautiful picture forming.

Our lives often look like the underside.

But God sees the finished design.

We are all under construction. A work in progress. Sometimes the process looks messy because God is still weaving the story.

Give Him time.

Be patient with yourself.

“He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion…” — Philippians 1:6

And remember - we are His holy, special treasure - not called to become 'entangled in the world', but to remain 'set apart' for His honor and glory. If we have become tangled up in things that we know are not pleasing to the Lord and created a big mess in our lives, there is still hope. God is a merciful Redeemer and a powerful Deliverer.

Before taking the throne of Israel, David found himself in a terrible plonter - a dilema that seemed impossible find a gracious escape route. Being persecuted by King Saul, David took refuge with the Phillistines - the enemies of Israel! Oye! Perhaps it seemed like his only option at the time. Probably he was just tired of running & hiding. Sound familiar??

"David said in his heart, “Now I shall perish someday by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape to the land of the Philistines; and Saul will despair of me, to seek me anymore in any part of Israel" (1 Samuel 27:1)

There are times when our options seem limited so we make a decision that only takes us from the fire to the frying pan (or is it the other way around?) Never mind - you know what I mean. We can just make matters worse when we try to find our own deliverance instead of trusting God to make a way of escape.

David's plan actually seemed to be working ... until it wasn't. The Phillistines went to war against Israel and David was expected to join them! What?? The future king of Israel fighting against his own people in alliance with the Phillistines? Unthinkable!

But what was David to do? He had taken refuge with the Phillistines and found favor with their king Achish. In fact, just to make it more of a plonter, the King decided to make David his personal bodyguard!

"And Achish said to David, “Therefore I will make you one of my chief guardians forever.” (1 Samuel 28:2)

I think this was a plonter that even David couldn't extricate himself from ... but God...

Although David had found favor with the King of the Phillistines, the Lord caused the Phillistines princes to distrust David. They refused to go into battle with him lest he turn against them and side with Israel.

So in the end, King Achish himself, kicked David out and sent him on his way:

"Achish answered and said to David, “I know that you are as good in my sight as an angel of God; nevertheless the princes of the Philistines have said, ‘He shall not go up with us to the battle.’  Now therefore, rise early in the morning with your master’s servants who have come with you. And as soon as you are up early in the morning and have light, depart.” (1 Samuel 29:9-10)

Has God ever rescued you from a real plonter?? I know He has for me many times over!

Even as a King, David still made a plonter out of His life at times. He stayed home from the battlefield one time - maybe to just lay on the couch and watch netflix, idk... - and happened to see a beautiful woman bathing on her rooftop. I know we never pegged King David for a peeping Tom with binoculars, but there it is... The Bible doesn't sugar coat even great Bibical character's flaws and weaknesses.

As the story goes, David ended up getting Batsheba pregnant and then tried to cover up his 'indiscretion' by having her husband killed on the battlefield. Oye, David! (Palm to the forehead emoji). What a mess!

God did not allow the baby from their union to live, but in the end, David repented when confronted with his sin, and went on to rule the Kingdom of Israel with righteousness, justice and courage.

God is the potter and we are the clay - imperfect, yes, but the mess is part of the process. We are still on the Potter's wheel, so let's give God time to make something beautiful out of our messy lives.

“He has made everything beautiful in its time.” — Ecclesiastes 3:11

Even the plonter. 💙

🙏 Prayer:

Lord, when life feels tangled and overwhelming, help us not to panic or strive in our own strength. Give us Your wisdom, peace, and direction for each step ahead. Teach us to trust You in the middle of the mess, knowing that You are able to bring beauty from chaos and turn our struggles into a testimony of Your faithfulness. In Yeshua’s name, amen.
